The Wastewater operations of the Public Works – Maintenance Services Division is responsible for public sewer mains, storm drains, lift stations and pumping stations. Overseeing over 361 miles of sewer lines, and 1,248 storm drain catch basins, the Wastewater operation provides environmental responses to sewer spills, clearing blockages caused by overgrown roots, debris and grease. The Wastewater section also conducts water sampling across city owned properties that affect the sewer system. The Wastewater operation is comprised of multiple grade leveled California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) certified staff.
The City of Glendale has over 600 food service establishments (FSEs) and has a goal to inspect each FSE at least once every 18 months. The Wastewater section provides “best management practices” guidance to FSEs, reviews maintenance records for FSEs, and checks grease removal equipment for conformance with maintenance requirements as part of the operation’s Fats, Oils, and Grease Program (FOG).
All food service establishments are required to obtain an Industrial Waste Permit. The permit regulates the discharge of fats, oils and grease into grease traps that are compliant with California state law. The Wastewater section oversees the implementation of this permit and an application can be found on the website’s menu page.
