City of Glendale, CA
Home MenuGlendale Canopy Improvement Phase II Pilot Tree Planting Project
Scope of Work
The City was awarded a Bipartisan Inflation Reduction Act grant, funded in part by an Urban and Community Forestry grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, and implemented with their national passthrough partner, GreenLatinos. This grant funds two phases of important urban forestry work in Glendale. In Phase I, a citywide digital survey was undertaken by PlanIT Geo, Inc., to identify existing tree canopy coverage and to locate areas most in need of street trees.
The second, ongoing Phase II is a pilot tree planting program, based on the results of Phase I. The grant funds the planting of 104 new City street trees, which will be first offered to a portion of the Glenwood neighborhood, nearest to W. Glenoaks Blvd and N. Pacific Avenue. A direct mailer was sent to certain households within the granted area to inform them of the project and the opportunity to receive a new street tree. These households may opt to select 1 of 3 tree species designated for their street.
If the City does not receive sufficient responses from the targeted area, additional trees will be planted in nearby granted portions of the Glenwood neighborhood based on interest and need.
Property owners who are interested in receiving new City street trees, but who are not located within the project area, can contact Public Works Maintenance Services at (818) 548-3950 to request a new tree. Any requests received will be processed for the City’s next annual reforestation program beginning Winter 2026-2027.
Project Schedule
The 104-tree planting will begin on or around March 1, 2026, and will be completed no later than June 30, 2026. Ongoing watering will occur for roughly three (3) years following planting, and the City will perform annual young tree maintenance for the next five (5) years, in line with City policy and tree care best management practices. Following this, the trees will be maintained on the City’s standard rolling cycle of mature tree maintenance.
Phase I’s citywide canopy assessment is complete. Please visit the Tree Plotter Community Engagement Map for more information and to view the City’s tree canopy coverage, possible planting areas, and change in canopy over time.
