The Verdugo Regional Crime Laboratory Forensic Science Internship Program (unpaid) provides an opportunity for interns to explore career options, acquire knowledge and skills complementary to academic studies, enhance professional development, and network with specialists in the forensic science community. Interns are required to maintain the house-keeping of the laboratories, assist analysts with assigned tasks and often times shadow forensic personnel at crime scenes or within a laboratory setting. Depending on skill level, interns may assist with evidence transfers, quality control duties, and/or validation studies.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid, state-issued driver’s license.
  • Preferred educational background (at least one of the following):
    • Successful completion of the third year at an accredited college or university, actively pursuing or having recently earned a bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a Biology-/Chemistry-related field.
    • Pursuing or completed a Master’s Degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a Biology-/Chemistry-related field.
    • Pursuing or completion of a certificate program in Forensic Science.
    • Pursuing or completion of an Associates Degree in Biotechnology or Forensic Science.
  • Students who are attending a college or university must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale and remain in good standing with their undergraduate or graduate degree program.
  • Former students must have graduated with a minimum GPA of 3.0 if applicable.
  • Dedicate a minimum of 15–20 hours per week to the internship. Laboratory hours are from 7:30 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday (no weekends/holidays). Interns will find that the more hours that are dedicated at the forensic laboratory will result in a more in-depth and worthwhile experience.
  • This is an unpaid internship that does not include employee benefits or guarantee employment. However, the internship offers valuable hands-on experience in a small accredited forensic laboratory within the Crime Scene Unit and the Forensic Biology Unit. Interns will have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills related to crime scenes, latent print and DNA processing, and NIBIN.
  • At this time, we are not accepting summer only interns.
