Speed Safety Program

In 2023, the California State Legislature authorized a speed safety camera pilot program for six designated cities, the City of Glendale being one of them. Speed safety cameras are a proven tool to address excessive speeding and reduce severe and fatal traffic collisions. With the passage of AB 645, Glendale will be able to use this technology to slow down speeding vehicles on our streets.

Impact Report

The Impact Report includes the assessment of the potential impact on civil liberties, the recommended Speed Safety System locations, and how the city collaborated with relevant local stakeholder organizations. The report also includes fiscal costs, encompassing program establishment, ongoing expenses, and funding sources. The Impact Report is available for public review and comment.

Use Policy

The Speed Safety System Use Policy intends to promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in the use of automated enforcement technology. This Policy outlines the operational guidelines, data handling procedures, and measures to protect individual privacy rights. It also includes protocols for violation notification, the process for contesting violations, outlines data retention schedules, specifies conditions for public access, and regulates third-party data. Project Timeline

Mid-2024 to Early 2025: Finalize data collection to determine speed safety camera locations and get community input. The recommended list of nine speed safety camera locations will be released in early 2025.
Early 2025: Secure multiple project approvals through the City’s Transportation and Parking Commission, and City Council.
Mid-2025: The City issues an RFQ/RFP to select a vendor that will implement speed safety camera technology and operate the speed safety camera system. The chosen vendor designs and builds nine speed safety camera system sites throughout the city. Mid to Late 2025: Implementation concludes and a 30-day public information campaign will begin. Speed safety cameras will be calibrated and tested.
Late 2025: Once speed safety cameras are activated, the first two months of system operations will issue warning notices to speeding vehicles. After 60 days, speed safety cameras will begin issuing citations to speeding vehicles.
