Project Scope:

The project involves replacing the existing playgrounds at Adams Square Mini Park and Mayors Bicentennial Park, which were originally installed over 16 and 19 years ago, respectively. The upgrades will feature new poured-in-place (PIP) safety surfacing and upgraded play elements designed for enhanced inclusivity, accessibility, and expanded sensory and imaginative play opportunities. The updated designs at both parks will include integrated shade structures to enhance comfort and usability.

Additionally, at Adams Square Mini Park, staff identified the need to replace existing furniture and fixtures as part of the improvements.

Budget:

The budget is $545,000 in Measure A funds for design and development of the playground replacement at Adams Square Mini Park and $702,000 in Measure A funds for design and development of the playground replacement at Mayors Bicentennial Park.

Background:

From May 20 through June 23, 2024, the public was invited to complete an online community survey for each site. Thank you to those who took our first survey.   Based on the first survey results, we worked with two vendors on developing 4 different playground design options for each site. 

The public was then invited to complete Round 2 community surveys from September 19 through October 25, 2024, to gauge the community's preference of design for each playground.

We additionally offered the opportunity to meet out Park Planner at the respective sites to discuss their design options: Adams Square Mini Park, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM; and Mayors Bicentennial Park, Thursday, October 10, 2024, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Based on community feedback, staff presented the preferred designs for each site to the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission at their regular meeting on Monday, December 16, 2024. At the meeting, the commission approved a motion recommending City Council approval of "Custom Truck" designed by Kompan, Inc. for the Adams Square Mini Park Playground Replacement Project and  "Custom Owl" designed by Kompan, Inc. for the Mayors Bicentennial Park Playground Replacement Project. You can view the report and video of the meeting HERE.

Staff presented final "Custom Truck" Design for Adams Square Mini Park and final "Custom Owl" Design for Mayors Bicentennial Park to the City Council on August 26, 2025 and Council passed a motion to approve the finals designs for Adams Square Mini Park and Mayors Bicentennial Park. Status Update:

Construction at Mayors Bicentennial Park began on June 1, 2026, and re-opended on July 29, 2026.  

Construction at Adams Square Mini Park is anticipated to begin August 31, 2026, with an anticipated completion date of October 31, 2026.
