Zoning Ordinance

Zoning the city is the process of dividing the city into areas that have different development regulations. These regulations are found in the City's Zoning Ordinance.  The purpose of the zoning ordinance is to designate, regulate and restrict the location and use of buildings, structures and land to protect residential, commercial, and industrial and recreation/open space areas alike from harmful encroachment by incompatible uses. The City of Glendale has:

The City also employs various overlay zones that add focused regulations to specific properties or areas:

Zoning Map (4 mb--PDF format)

The Zoning Map of the City shows the various zoning categories and where they are located. The Zoning Map is one, continuous, large image of the City. The map has been updated to incorporate the zone changes resulting from the adoption of the North Glendale Community Plan in December 2011, the South Brand Boulevard area changes approved in January 2012 and several Historic Districts.

Zoning Index Map (4.9 mb--PDF format)

The Zoning Index Map shows the entire city divided up into smaller areas, or grids. Each grid has an identification number, such as F-01. By clicking on the grid number, you will see the zoning for that grid at a much higher resolution than can be shown on the city-wide zoning map. Each of the small maps can be downloaded or printed, they are 500-600 kb in size, and are in the .pdf format. In the upper right corner is the legend. These pages have not yet been updated to show the new Cumberland Heights Historic District.

Municipal Code

Various sections of the Municipal Code also refer to or address Planning issues and are listed below for easy reference. Clicking on a section of the code will open a new window with the code in it. To return to this list, simply close the new window. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this information, the online Municipal Code is provided as a reference to the citizens of Glendale and the Internet Community. For the most recent, printed version, please contact the Community Development Department, Permit Services Center at (818) 548-3200.
