Suspect Identified and Arrested Involving Assault with a Deadly Weapon against Glendale Officers

Glendale, CA. — On August 31, 2018, the US Marshals Task Force arrested 36 year old Ryan Alvarez in the city of Lancaster. Glendale Police Department detectives identified Alvarez as the suspect wanted on several felony charges stemming from an incident that occurred in La Crescenta on August 21, 2018 at approximately 10:25 a.m.
On August 21, 2018, Glendale officers received a call of a theft in progress from the Vons located at 3233 Foothill Blvd in La Crescenta. Officers arriving on scene were informed the suspect was still located inside the store. As the officers positioned themselves near the entrance, an officer observed the suspect exit the store. The suspect ignored commands given by an officer and a foot pursuit ensued. The suspect entered a white Mustang with paper plates and fled westbound on Foothill. While attempting to evade officers, the suspect collided into a marked police vehicle. The suspect continued to ignore commands while being surrounded by officers and police vehicles. The suspect then fled in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed, driving over an officer’s foot. The suspect entered a parking lot on Foothill just west of Boston, abandoned the Mustang and continued to flee on foot.
Glendale police officer's set up a perimeter and conducted an extensive search, but they were unable to locate the suspect. Further investigation revealed the Mustang was an unreported stolen out of the City of Burbank. A search of the vehicle revealed 159 Sunrise Ford key fobs/keys located inside the vehicle.
The Verdugo Regional Crime Lab located at the Glendale Police Department, collected and processed evidence left behind at the crime scene by the suspect.
Through departmental resources and DNA obtained from evidence, detectives identified Ryan Alvarez as the suspect involved in the La Crescenta case.
On August 30, 2018, Glendale detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the below filing was obtained:
- Three counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon against Police Officers (245 (c) P.C.)
- One count of Driving or Taking a Vehicle without Consent (10851 V.C.)
- One count of Receiving Stolen Property (496 P.C.)
- One count of Petty Theft (484 (a) P.C.)
- One count of Driving with License Suspended or Revoked due to DUI Conviction with a Prior Offense (14601.2 (a) and (d) (2)).
Detectives continued their investigation in attempt to locate and apprehend Alvarez. Through investigative resources, Alvarez was located at a residence in the 5300 block of West Avenue L4 in the City of Lancaster and taken into custody without incident on August 31, 2018.
Further investigation revealed a Ford Explorer parked in the driveway of the residence was a reported stolen vehicle.
Alvarez has an extensive criminal history and has served time for gross vehicular manslaughter. At the time of his arrest, he was on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS).
The booking photo will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation by Glendale detectives.
