Glendale, CA – At approximately 2:45 pm, Glendale Fire Department units responded to reports of a single-family residential fire with an occupant trapped inside on the 400 block of South Columbus Ave. Firefighters in route to the scene observed heavy smoke and requested two additional fire engines to assist. Upon arrival, crews quickly initiated a fire attack and primary search in order to rescue the victim inside. Upon locating the victim, firefighters removed him from the structure and quickly initiated medical care. The patient was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition.
Due to the proximity of the fire to adjacent properties, the fire spread to the neighboring 2-story apartment building. Firefighters forced entry to ensure all the occupants were evacuated and extinguished the fire. Knockdown of the fire occurred at 3:20 pm. Once the fire had been extinguished, lengthy salvage and overhaul operations ensued. Fire Chief Greg Fish oversaw the operations that transpired, “I am very proud of the men and women of the Glendale Fire Department and the quick actions they took on such a multifaceted incident.”
One firefighter was injured battling the blaze with burns sustained to his left hand. The fire also resulted in power lines down which added to the complexity of this incident, Glendale Water and Power was able to quickly report on scene and safeguard the lines as the Glendale Police Department maintained a secure perimeter during the duration of the incident. The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation by the Glendale Fire Department.
