ABOUT THE EXHIBITION AND JUROR
The Brand Associates is pleased to announce Leslie Jones, curator of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as juror for its 45th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper. Both curator and art historian, Jones has worked in New York at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim. She earned her PhD in 2003 from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts with a dissertation on the ink drawings of Henri Michaux. Jones specializes in modern and contemporary works on paper and has been at LACMA since 2005. Among the exhibitions she has curated are: Drawing Surrealism (2012), Ed Moses, Drawings from the 1960s and 70s (2015) and, most recently, Tony Smith: Smoke (on view at LACMA through July 2, 2017).
Jones joins a distinguished roster of jurors who have donated their time, energy and expertise over the 45 years this exhibition has been mounted. Included among these artists, gallerists, curators, and educators are Laddie John Dill (2016), Lita Albuquerque (2007), Jack Rutberg (2014), Louise Lewis (1999), D.J. Hall (1989) and Millard Sheets (1979).
The Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper has been sponsored by the Brand Associates since 1971, in cooperation with Glendale Library, Arts & Culture. It is one of the region’s most prestigious juried shows. In recent years the Works on Paper exhibitions have included an increasingly diverse array of three-dimensional artworks as well as an expanding range of approaches to the two-dimensional paper surface. This year’s exhibition chairperson, Debra Thompson, is a Director of the Brand Associates and an adjunct Assistant Professor of Art History at Glendale College.
Brand Library & Art Center has been a cornerstone for the arts in Southern California since 1956. This unique public library focuses on visual arts and music and provides free services and programs for a diverse community, including a collection of over 110,000 items, subject-specialist librarians, exhibitions, concerts, lectures, dance performances, films, and hands-on craft programs for children and adults. Always evolving, Brand Library utilizes new technologies and continues to develop innovative programs to serve an ever-widening public interested in the arts. Brand Library & Art Center is a branch of the City of Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Department.
