Juror Leslie Jones chooses 84 artworks for exhibition at Brand Library & Art Center

GLENDALE, CA  Brand Associates will open its 45th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper (Brand 45) on September 16, 2017.  The exhibition was juried by Leslie Jones, a curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ms. Jones has selected 84 artworks from a total of 1,155 individual artworks submitted for consideration. The selected works represent 53 California-based artists and 31 artists from other states.     

The public Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony is Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 6 pm to 9 pm in the Brand Galleries. The exhibition will be on view through November 3, 2017.   Artworks are for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the free cultural programming offered at the Brand Library & Art Center.

New and existing members of the Brand Associates will have an exclusive opportunity to attend a ticketed preview of the exhibit and cocktail party on Friday, September 15 from 6 pm to 9 pm.  This event, titled “Paper preView”, will kick off the Brand Associates 2017 membership drive  and give existing and new members a first look at the exhibition. As part of a membership drive, new members who join between August 1 and September 7 will receive a free ticket to this special event preview. Tickets will be available starting on August 1st at  Brand Associates Director Simon Wright states, “This is a perfect opportunity for those who support the Brand Library’s programs to become members and also enjoy a first look or opportunity to purchase some extraordinary artwork ”. 

Juror Leslie Jones is curator of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).  Ms. Jones specializes in modern and contemporary works on paper and has been at LACMA since 2005. Among the exhibitions she has curated are: Drawing Surrealism (2012), Ed Moses: Drawings from the 1960s and 70s (2015) and, most recently, Tony Smith: Smoke (2017). Both curator and art historian, Jones has worked in New York at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim. 

Ms. Jones will choose one work to receive a Juror’s Award which will be announced at the September 16th opening reception.  Also to be announced are the Jane Friend Purchase Award, Robert Brown Award and three Brand Associates Awards. These awards total over $4,000. 

According to Exhibition Chair Debra Thompson, “The exhibit this year includes an array of three-dimensional artworks and installations as well as greater variety in artistic approaches to the paper surface than we have featured in previous years. Visitors will be impressed by the range of artistic expression on view.”

Background information: 

An annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper has been sponsored by Brand Associates since 1971 in cooperation with Brand Library & Art Center. It is one of the region’s most prestigious juried shows.  Many prominent artists and arts professionals have juried the show through the years, most recently artists Laddie John Dill and Kent Twitchell and gallerist Jack Rutberg.  Exhibition chairperson Debra Thompson is a Director of the Brand Associates and an adjunct Assistant Professor of Art History at Glendale Community College.  

The Brand Library & Art Center is part of the City of Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Department.  It is the repository for the music and art collections of the Glendale Library system and a venue for art exhibitions, performances, art education, and other cultural activities. Brand Library & Art Center is a significant historic and cultural resource in the the region. 

Brand Associates is the all-volunteer non-profit (501c3) organization raising funds to support the mission and programs of the Brand Library & Art Center and thus assuring that events continue to be free and open to the public. 

Ticketed “Paper pre-View” event for current and newly joined Brand Associates members is on  Friday, September 15, 2017 from 6 PM to 9 PM.  Tickets are on sale from August 1 to September 7:  one free ticket to new members joining at the $25 level and higher; two free tickets for members upgrading to $100 level or higher;  New and current members can purchase additional tickets for $30.00. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $40. Tickets will be available for purchase on August 1 at
